CARTOGRAPHY OF TRANSITIONS | Transitory Research Symposium | 23-24 May 2014

The Transitory Research Symposium is a two day gathering of artists, theorists and cultural activists participating in the first two years of the T.R.I.B.E. – Transitory Research/ Residency Initiative of the Balkans and Eastern Europe network.

Addressing the topic Cartographies of Transition, the symposium will evolve around four main topics: Defining transitory art, Cartographies of sound, Tools for civil disobedience and Mapping spaces. These four topics address the main aspects of transitory art in relation to the art works produced during the first two years, while simultaneously providing a philosophical and critical context for the understanding of transitory art.

Transitory art is art responding to times and spaces of transition. Its production and representation are directly reflecting discontinuities, ruptures, and uncertainties, symbolic of the present times.  It does so by defying borders, by developing tools with which to address these problems, by deconstructing and reconstructing mediums as well as ideas, by transforming creative processes, by inventing contexts, by educating, and reversing, by invading spaces and inventing languages. Cartography of Transitions will attempt to map these strategies, and provide a framework for the understanding of transitory art.

Responding to the four main topics, the symposium will consist of internal work sessions and the evening public program. As a parallel to the symposium, YKON will lead an YKON Game workshop, to which the public is invited.

Jean-Baptiste Naudy / Societe Realiste (FR), Nuria Guell (ES), Kevin Bartoli / ArtKIllArt (FR), Sabin Bors / Anti-Utopias (RO), Jan Vormann (DE), Matteo Marangoni / iii initiative (IT),  Martin Bricelj Baraga (SI), Luka Zagoričnik (SI),

Andrej Boleslavsky | VVVV & Kinect workshops

VVVV Open Platform Visual Programming
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 20, 21 & 23 May, 2014
17:00 - 21:00

Czech artist Andrej Boleslavsky and the members of #hack 66 explore interactivity and find creative ways to use it in theatre, during live performances and installations or even for video mapping. This workshop introduces the basic concepts for creating interactivity in art using the VVVV visual programming toolkit; an environment specifically designed for creative use, which allows fast and flexible runtime editing without syntax errors. If you never tried programming - here called patching - you will love VVVV. If you tried programming before, you will love it even more. VVVV is similar to Max/Msp or PureData.

Immaterial interfaces for site-specific art
Thursday, 22 May, 2014
17:00-21:00

We will explore the possibilities of depth sensors such as Kinect in the context of site-specific art and interactive installations. These sensors do not see how things look, they see where things are. This allows the creation of for complex, yet easy to create interactions for public and private spaces. During the workshop we will design and prototype a public art installation using Kinect sensors and PCs. We will also explore some basics of binary logic, how it can be used in real space and real situations for public games, social experiments, and interaction design. The workshop is suitable for artists and designers that are curious about innovative tools. The VVVV framework will be used throughout the workshop, but prior knowledge of this tool is not necessary.

Tat-Tnabar is a mighty team of 5 talented professionals in the fields of percussions, dance, theatre and music.
They were created by Lefteris Moschovias in Cyprus during the summer of 2000, and their goal is to break away from the usual musical trends, by utilizing anything but the usual musical instruments, with the source of their inspiration originating from the musical history of Africa.
They compose music for theatre, movies and documentaries and always perform their own music with instruments that they built from scratch.
Their music has been awarded the THOK (Cyprus Theatre Organization) theatre award as “Best music of the Year” on two separate occasions – 2005/06 and 2006/07.
They also perform and give seminars on “The evolution of rhythm and sound, from the Paleolithic era to today, of electronic music).
Sound-rhythm-moves with extracts taken from various African musical tribes that live in the depths of the jungle. With history, philosophy and mythology being the archives of human heritage. They are hymn singers, percussionists, healers, dancers, troubadours and only use self-made musical instruments from recycled materials.

The musical instruments that they use are recycled materials – pots and pans- buckets – barrels – plastic tubes and even vegetables. They manage to combine ecology with art and offer a unique spectacle as well as strong environmental message. They will travel you on magical paths where one can discover the beauties of our planet, from the desert to the Amazon rainforest, from the depths of Africa to modern Europe, from the sea bed to the highest mountain peak. Through beauty and art, culture is born alongside the respect of human being toward other human beings and the love in everything that surrounds us.

Moving Silence - 6 December 2013

Συμμετέχουν οι Marco Brosolo (DE / IT), Toni Kater (Anett Ecklebe) (DE), Pitchtuner (Johannes Marx) (DE), Natryx (GR), Tomash Ghzegovskyy (CY), Tat Tnabar (CY), Ανδρέας Μουστούκης (CY), Τάσος Στυλιανού (CY), Γεώργιος Σταύρου (CY)

Moving Silence στα πλαίσια του 5ου X-Dream Festival

Following the great success of Moving Silence in Cyprus in 2011 and 2012 at the ARTos Foundation, Moving Silence takes place for the third consecutive year in collaboration with the Goethe Institut Cyprus. On Friday 6 December 2013 at 20:30 at the ARTos Foundation musicians and composers from Germany, Greece and Cyprus will meet to perform live soundtracks for video and film works without sound by contemporary creators of their choice. The audience will have a unique experience where the musicians-composers perform live their music while the films/videos that ave inspired them are simultaneously screened. On the same evening performances with unique self-made and non-conventional instruments will take place.

"The contemporary cinema could take back this expressive freedom" the Moving Silence members state. "Any visual style can profit from a sound language, by using advanced digital technologies as well as old analog techniques. Live performances sustain and amplify the films as musicians can breathe new life into silent cinema, which inappropriately remained silent for such a long time." Encouraging collaboration and exchange between musicians, artists and cinematographers, the Moving Silence platform therefore invites the Nicosia audience to new audiovisual experiences expressed through live improvisations and interpretations, where experimental image and sound are expected to meet in unusual and unexpected ways.

Moving Silence was originally founded in summer 2009 by the musician Marco Brosolo, filmmaker Matthias Fritsch and producer Federico Bassetti with the aim to create events that connect the roots of cinematography with the present aesthetics of image, the live music production and the potential of new technology. It constitutes a poetic, intercultural and collaborative attempt in times of information overload. It embraces experimentation and merging between contemporary forms of visual and sound inviting artists from different parts of the world to join in. Moving Silence events have taken place in different cities around Europe.

Participating are Marco Brosolo (DE / IT), Toni Kater (Anett Ecklebe) (DE), Pitchtuner (Johannes Marx) (DE), Natryx (GR), Tomash Ghzegovskyy (CY), Tat Tnabar (CY), Andreas Moustoukis (CY), Tasos Stylianou (CY), Georgios Stavrou (CY)
