Five films between Black Box and White Cube that confront the past and ask in diverse ways “What remains?” Whilst Lior Shamriz both literally and figuratively investigates a bygone picture of Berlin, Josef Dabernig shows us in brilliantly composed black-and-white images people sitting on the banks of an Italian river who simply appropriate the landscape – regardless of its inhospitality. La estancia, winner of this year’s Grand Prize of the City of Oberhausen, depicts a massacre sparked by the battle for land rights in Paraguay, reconstructed as a series of subtle tableaux. The directors in this film programme employ a range of very unusual techniques and aesthetics, and some of their works have been shown to great acclaim in art exhibitions. Taken together, these films, some of them award-winning, give viewers an insight into the current state of international artist films.

Πέντε ταινίες, μεταξύ του Black Box και του White Cube που αντιμετωπίζουν το παρελθόν και ρωτούν με διάφορους τρόπους «Τι έχει απομείνει;» Ενώ ο Lior Shamriz διερευνά μια αλλοτινή εικόνα του Βερολίνου, τόσο κυριολεκτικά όσο και μεταφορικά, ο Josef Dabernig μας δείχνει μέσα από εξαιρετικά απαρτισμένες μαυρόασπρες εικόνες, ανθρώπους να κάθονται στις όχθες ενός ποταμού στην Ιταλία οι οποίοι οικειοποιούνται το τοπίο - ανεξάρτητα από την αφιλόξενη φύση του. Η ταινία «La Estancia», νικήτρια του φετινού Μεγάλου Βραβείου της Πόλης του Oberhausen, απεικονίζει μια σφαγή που προκλήθηκε από τη μάχη για τα δικαιώματα γης στην Παραγουάη, αναδομημένη σαν μια σειρά από ανεπαίσθητα «ταμπλό» (tableaux). Σε αυτό το πρόγραμμα ταινιών, οι σκηνοθέτες χρησιμοποιούν μια σειρά από πολύ ασυνήθιστες τεχνικές και αισθητικές, ενώ μερικά από τα έργα τους έχουν παρουσιαστεί με μεγάλη επιτυχία σε εικαστικές εκθέσεις. Στο σύνολό τους, αυτές οι ταινίες, μερικές εκ των οποίων βραβευμένες, δίνουν στους θεατές μια εικόνα για την τρέχουσα κατάσταση των διεθνών εικαστικών ταινιών.

The International Short Film Festival Oberhausen has been part of the highly charged field of short films for over 50 years now, as a catalyst and a showcase for contemporary developments, a forum for what are often heated discussions, a discoverer of new trends and talent, and not least as one of the most important short film institutions anywhere in the world. Some 6,000 films submitted on average per year, around 500 films shown in the festival programmes and over 1,100 accredited industry professionals are proof enough.

In the course of more than five decades, the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen has become one of the world's most respected film events - a place where filmmakers and artists ranging from Roman Polanski to Cate Shortland, from George Lucas to Pipilotti Rist have presented their first films. Oberhausen has managed to instigate various political and aesthetical developments, for instance through the Oberhausen Manifesto, perhaps the most important group document in the history of German film. Careful programming and a pioneering choice of subjects has helped the Festival to build up its exclusive position in an increasingly unpredictable market.

ARTos Foundationis proud to welcome for the first time two screening programs of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen which will take place on the 13 & 14 May 2015, at ARTos Foundation, Nicosia, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute. Further Screenings in Cyprus include the 5 June 2015 at TECHNO.POLIS 20 Cultural Centre, Paphos and 7 & 8 June 2015, at the Pierides Museum, Larnaka, in collaboration with the Larnaka Cinema Society.

Το Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Ταινιών Μικρού Μήκους Oberhausen αποτελεί κομμάτι του έντονα φορτισμένου τομέα των ταινιών μικρού μήκους για πάνω από 50 χρόνια τώρα. Λειτουργεί σαν καταλύτης και βιτρίνα για τις σύγχρονες εξελίξεις, ένα φόρουμ για συνήθως έντονες συζητήσεις, ένα μέσο ανακάλυψης νέων τάσεων και ταλέντων, και ένας από τους σημαντικότερους θεσμούς ταινιών μικρού μήκους σε όλο τον κόσμο. Κατά μέσο όρο, περίπου 6.000 ταινίες υποβάλλονται ετησίως, περίπου 500 ταινίες προβάλλονται στο πλαίσιο των προγραμμάτων του φεστιβάλ ενώ οι πάνω από 1.100 διακεκριμένοι επαγγελματίες αυτής της βιομηχανίας αποτελούν την απόδειξη.

Εδώ και πέντε δεκαετίες, το Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Ταινιών Μικρού Μήκους Oberhausen έχει γίνει μια από τις πιο  σεβαστές εκδηλώσεις ταινιών ανά το παγκόσμιο - ένας χώρος όπου δημιουργοί ταινιών και καλλιτέχνες, από τον Roman Polanski μέχρι τη Cate Shortland, από τον George Lucas μέχρι τη Pipilotti Rist, έχουν παρουσιάσει τις πρώτες τους ταινίες. Το Oberhausen έχει καταφέρει να υποκινήσει διάφορες πολιτικές και αισθητικές εξελίξεις, όπως για παράδειγμα μέσω του Oberhausen Μανιφέστο, το οποίο είναι ίσως το πιο σημαντικό ομαδικό έγγραφο στην ιστορία του γερμανικού κινηματογράφου. Ο προσεκτικός προγραμματισμός και η πρωτοποριακή επιλογή των θεμάτων συνέβαλε στη κατοχύρωση  της αποκλειστικής θέσης του Φεστιβάλ σε μια όλο και πιο απρόβλεπτη αγορά.

Το Ίδρυμα ARTos,σε συνεργασία με το Ινστιτούτο Goethe παρουσιάζει για πρώτη φορά δύο προγράμματα προβολών του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Ταινιών Μικρού Μήκους Oberhausen, τα οποία θα προβληθούν στις 13 & 14 Μαΐου 2015, στο Ίδρυμα ARTos, Λευκωσία. Περαιτέρω προβολές στην Κύπρο στις 5 Ιουνίου 2015 στον Πολιτιστικό Χώρο ΤΕΧΝΟ.ΠΟΛΙΣ 20, Πάφος και στις 7 & 8 Ιουνίου στο Μουσείο Πιερίδη, Λάρνακα, σε συνεργασία με την Κινηματογραφική Λέσχη Λάρνακας.

ARTos Foundation and the French Institute in Cyprus, in collaboration with the Municipality of Nicosia, present “Circus Arts Fest”; an outdoor circus arts performance which will take place at Eleftheria Square in Nicosia, on the 24 April at 18:00. Two French companies will be performing on that occasion: “La Main s’affaire”, a pair of hand-to-hand acrobats, and the “Longshow Company”, offering a contemporary juggling and graphic manipulation show.

A turbulent relationship between two artists: technical harmony but ideological opposition. How can they demystify the entertainment and stimulate the critical mindset through breathtaking acrobatic lifts? Through the use of humor, a touch of irony and solid acrobatic skills, the duo aims at showing that there are numerous ways to watch the flow of information that surrounds us.

“Opticirque” (30’)

In this solo creation, through his own dreams and chimeras, Nicolas Longuechaud draws and shares with the audience the  singular story of one circus, his circus. Made from collective memory and inspired by almost true stories, everything mixes up together for the character. Between circus, cabaret, and fair theatre atmosphere, on the edge between hypnotic and graphic manipulations, new magic, and curiosity sideshow, this show will open up a world of wonder around perception.

Το Ίδρυμα ARTos και το Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο Κύπρου, σε συνεργασία με το Δήμο Λευκωσίας, παρουσιάζουν το «Circus Arts Fest» μια παράσταση τσίρκου του δρόμου, που θα πραγματοποιηθεί στην Πλατεία Ελευθερίας στη Λευκωσία, στις 24 Απριλίου και ώρα 18:00.  Οι δύο γαλλικοί θίασοι που θα συμμετέχουν είναι οι: «La Main s'affaire», ένα ζευγάρι ακροβατών χέρι-με-χέρι, και «Longshow Company», που θα μας προσφέρουν μια παράσταση σύγχρονης ζογκλερικής και επιδέξιου χειρισμού γραφικών.

Ακροβατική παράσταση, από τους La Main s'affaire

Μια ταραχώδης σχέση δύο καλλιτεχνών: τεχνική αρμονία αλλά και ιδεολογική αντίθεση. Πώς μπορούν να απομυθοποιήσουν την ψυχαγωγία και να διεγείρουν την κριτική νοοτροπία μέσα από ακροβατικά που σου κόβουν την ανάσα; Μέσω του χιούμορ, μιας δόσης ειρωνείας και αμιγών ακροβατικών ικανοτήτων, το δίδυμο αυτό έχει ως στόχο να δείξει ότι υπάρχουν πολυάριθμοι τρόποι να παρακολουθήσει κανείς τη ροή των πληροφοριών που μας περιβάλλει.

«Opticirque» (30')

 Παράσταση οπτικών ψευδαισθήσεων, από τους Longshow Company

Μέσω των ονείρων και των χιμαιρών του, ο Nicolas Longuechaud σε αυτή τη σόλο δημιουργία, «ζωγραφίζει» και μοιράζεται με το κοινό τη μοναδική ιστορία ενός τσίρκου,  του δικού του τσίρκου. Φτιαγμένη με βάση τη συλλογική μνήμη και εμπνευσμένη από σχεδόν αληθινές ιστορίες, έτσι τα πάντα περιπλέκονται για τον πρωταγωνιστή μας. Μια παράσταση μεταξύ τσίρκου, καμπαρέ, και ατμόσφαιρας θεάτρου, στα όρια μεταξύ του υπνωτισμού και τoν επιδέξιο χειρισμό γραφικών, μια νέας μαγείας, και ενός «sideshow» περιέργειας, αυτή η παράσταση θα ανοίξει έναν θαυμαστό κόσμο γύρω από την αντίληψη.

ARTos Foundation and the Cyprus International Performance Art Society (CIPAS) collaborate for the realization of a series of group art performances within the framework of the 7^th X-Dream Festival.  The first group performance will take place on Friday, 17 April 2015 at 20:00, at ARTos Foundation and is co-organized by ARTos Foundation and CIPAS. A group performance will also take place during the 3^rd Cyprus International Performance Art Festival (CIPAF) that will take place on the 20 and 21 June, at ARTos Foundation.  

This group Art Performance is a performance work that is formed through ideas and practices from Performance Art and Fluxus, meaning that no rehearsal is taking place before and no repetition of the same performance happens afterwards. The idea of the group performance came out from the Performance Art workshop, by Christina Georgiou, that took place at ARTos Foundation in the previous year. The group performance consists of 6 participants; mainly visual artists but also artists from other artistic backgrounds who participated in the Performance Art workshop.

  

A few words about CIPAS:

The Cyprus International Performance Art Society (CIPAS) was founded in 2013 and is a registered NGO and a non-profit organization created for and dedicated to the field of Performance Art. Having its basis in Nicosia, Cyprus, this initiative brings together, supports and disseminates the work of performance artists from around the globe, through activities that take place in Cyprus throughout the year. At the same time, it endeavors to engage the public in this process and the artists in the local peculiarity.

CIPAS aims to offer a number of opportunities to artists while encouraging relationships with local, national and international networks. CIPAS is an attempt to create a group of people working for the realization of projects that focus on or involve Performance Art under the frame of collaboration and contribution. CIPAS also encourages the implementation of interdisciplinary projects that create possible interconnections between Performance Art and other artistic or scientific practices.

CIPAS has under its umbrella a number of activities: residency/ research programs, training/ educational programs/ workshops, exhibitions and the yearly Cyprus International Performance Art Festival (CIPAF), which its 3^rd realization will take place in June 2015.

Tο Ίδρυμα ARTos και ο Cyprus International Performance Art Society (CIPAS) συνεργάζονται για την υλοποίηση μιας σειράς ομαδικών εικαστικών performances μέσα στα πλαίσια του 7^ου X-Dream Festival. Η πρώτη πραγματοποίηση θα λάβει χώρα την Παρασκευή, 17 Απριλίου 2015 στις 20:00, στο Ίδρυμα ARTos και είναι μια συν-διοργάνωση του Ιδρύματος ARTos και του CIPAS. Ένα ακόμα ομαδικό εικαστικό performance θα πραγματοποιηθεί κατά τη διάρκεια του 3ου Cyprus International Performance Art Festival (CIPAF) που θα λάβει χώρα στις 20 και 21 Ιουνίου , στο Ίδρυμα ARTos.

Το ομαδικό αυτό Εικαστικό Performance είναι ένα έργο performance που διαμορφώνεται μέσα από ιδέες και πρακτικές από το Performance Art και Fluxus, πράγμα που σημαίνει ότι δεν πραγματοποιείται οποιαδήποτε πρόβα προηγουμένως και δεν επαναλαμβάνεται ποτέ το ίδιο performance μετά. Η ιδέα του ομαδικού performance προέκυψε από το εργαστήρι Performance Art της Χριστίνας Γεωργίου, που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Ίδρυμα ARTos τον προηγούμενο χρόνο. Το ομαδικό performance αποτελείται από 6 συμμετέχοντες, κυρίως εικαστικούς καλλιτέχνες, αλλά και καλλιτέχνες από άλλα καλλιτεχνικά υπόβαθρα, οι οποίοι συμμετείχαν στο συγκεκριμένο εργαστήρι Performance Art. 

O CIPAS έχει ως στόχο να προσφέρει αριθμό ευκαιριών σε καλλιτέχνες, ενώενθαρρύνει σχέσεις με τοπικά, εθνικά και διεθνή δίκτυα. Ο CIPAS είναι μια προσπάθεια για να δημιουργηθεί μια ομάδα ανθρώπων που εργάζονται για την υλοποίηση έργων που εστιάζουν σε ή περιλαμβάνουν το Performance Art κάτω από το πλαίσιο της συνεργασίας και της συμβολής. Ο CIPAS ενθαρρύνει επίσης την πραγματοποίηση διεπιστημονικών έργων τα οποία δημιουργούν πιθανές διασυνδέσεις μεταξύ του Performance Art και άλλων καλλιτεχνικών ή επιστημονικών πρακτικών. Ο CIPAS έχει κάτω από την ομπρέλα του μια σειρά από δραστηριότητες: residencies / ερευνητικά προγράμματα, εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα / εργαστήρια, εκθέσεις και το ετήσιο Cyprus International Performance Art Festival (CIPAF), που θα πραγματοποιηθεί για 3η φορά τον Ιούνιο του 2015.

Λίγα λόγια για τον CIPAS:

Ο Cyprus International Performance Art Society (CIPAS) ιδρύθηκε το 2013 και είναι ένας εγγεγραμμένος ΜΚΟ / μη-κερδοσκοπικός οργανισμός που δημιουργήθηκε  και είναι αφιερωμένος στο Performance Art. Έχοντας τη βάση του στη Λευκωσία της Κύπρου, η πρωτοβουλία αυτή συγκεντρώνει, υποστηρίζει και διαδίδει το έργο καλλιτεχνών του performance από όλο τον κόσμο, μέσω των δραστηριοτήτων που λαμβάνουν χώρα στην Κύπρο κατά τη διάρκεια του χρόνου. Ταυτόχρονα, προσπαθεί να εμπλέξει το κοινό στη διαδικασία αυτή και τους καλλιτέχνες στην τοπική ιδιαιτερότητα.

O CIPAS έχει ως στόχο να προσφέρει αριθμό ευκαιριών σε καλλιτέχνες, ενώ ενθαρρύνει σχέσεις με τοπικά, εθνικά και διεθνή δίκτυα. Ο CIPAS είναι μια προσπάθεια για να δημιουργηθεί μια ομάδα ανθρώπων που εργάζονται για την υλοποίηση έργων που εστιάζουν σε ή περιλαμβάνουν το Performance Art κάτω από το πλαίσιο της συνεργασίας και της συμβολής. The film ‘Poetry of the Hills’ produced by Benoy K. Behl, is based on the miniature paintings of Kangra, a small district located in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh on the foot-hills of the Himalayan mountain range. The world of Kangra paintings is one of tenderness and love.  It is the spirit of “Bhakti”- devotion, the ecstatic joy of adoration of the supreme joy of the giving of oneself in the love of God which pervades the entire world of these paintings.  After many centuries the paintings of Kangra take us back to the sense of the tender and compassionate world created by the paintings of Ajanta.

Benoy K. Behl:

Benoy K. Behl is a well known photographer and film maker who has made over 100 documentary films and taken over 35000 photographs covering India’s cultural and architectural heritage stretching over two millennia.  He has taken photographs of historic monuments and ancient Buddhist paintings in India and has published in international magazines like the National Geographic.
