ARTos Foundation presents 'Naturally Artificial' by the architect Constantinos Louca. The exhibition will take place on 23/12/2014, between 19:00 and 22:00. A fabricated environment made out of 100,000 drinking straws, projected visuals and sound effects, enact an imaginary setting. An immersive installation focuses attention on how we perceive our surroundings, in suggesting an alternative relationship between natural and artificial.

Το Ίδρυμα ΆΡΤος  παρουσιάζει στις 23/12/2014, και ώρα 19:00-22:00, το «Naturally Artificial» του αρχιτέκτονα Κωνσταντίνου Λουκά.  Κατασκευές από 100,000 καλαμάκια, προβολές και ήχοι συντελούν στη διαμόρφωση ενός φανταστικού τοπίου. Μία εμπειρική αναπαράσταση στοχεύει να καυστηριάσει τον τρόπο αντίληψης του περιβάλλοντα χώρου, προτείνοντας μια αλλιώτικη σχέση μεταξύ φυσικού και τεχνητού.

Προβολή του ντοκιμαντέρ «The Story of Technoviking» του συν-ιδρυτή του Moving Silence Matthias Fritsch. 

Τι θα κάνατε, αν χορεύατε ημίγυμνος στη μέση του δρόμου μπροστά από μια κάμερα, χρόνια αργότερα, ο κόσμος δημιουργεί ένα ήρωα, λατρεύει την εικόνα σας, αλλά εσείς δεν τα θέλετε όλα αυτά; Το "The Story of Technoviking" ακολουθεί ένα ιογενές διαδικτυακό φαινόμενο από την γέννηση του μέχρι την αίθουσα του δικαστηρίου. Γυρισμένη σε δημόσιο χώρο, επισημασμένη και διασκευασμένη από μια κοινότητα, κοινοποιημένη από εκατομμύρια κόσμο, αλλά λογοκριμένη - αντιπροσωπεύει ένα δίλημμα το οποίο δημιουργείται όταν η κουλτούρα και η συμπεριφορά μας αλλάζει δραστικά, και όπου τα ψηφιακά μέσα και μερικά από τα θεμελιώδη δικαιώματά μας έρχονται σε σύγκρουση. Η ταινία "Τhe Story of Technoviking" είναι ένα πρότζεκτ του συνιδρυτή του Moving Silence, Matthias Fritsch. Την Παρασκευή το βράδυ θα προβληθεί ένα test-screening αυτού τους σχεδόν ολοκληρωμένου και σε εξέλιξη ντοκιμαντέρ. Την παρουσίαση θα ακολουθήσει συζήτηση σχετικά με την ταινία και το θέμα με το οποίο καταπιάνεται. Η ταινία θα είναι έτοιμη τέλος Δεκεμβρίου.

Presentation of the ‘The Story of Technoviking’ Documentary by Matthias Fritsch.

What would you do, when you danced half naked in the middle of the street in front of a camera, years later the world creates itself a hero, worships your image but you don't want all of this? "The Story of Technoviking" follows a viral online phenomenon from its origin to the court room. Filmed in public space, labelled and remixed by a community, shared by millions but censored – it represents a dilemma that is created when our culture and behaviour changes drastically, and where the digital media and some of our fundamental rights get in conflict with each other.

The "Τechnoviking" film is a project by moving silence co-founder Matthias Fritsch. On Friday evening  a test-screening of this nearly finished work in progress documentary will be screened. The presentation will be followed by a discussion based on the film and it's topic. The film itself will be ready in end of December.

An evening dedicated to contemporary 
“silent” moving image and experimental sound

Following the great success of Moving Silence in Cyprus in 2011, 2012 and 2013 at ARTos Foundation, Moving Silence takes place for the fourth consecutive year in collaboration with the Goethe Institut Cyprus. OnSaturday 13 December 2014 at 20:30 at ARTos Foundation, musicians and composers will meet to perform live soundtracks for video and film works without sound by contemporary creators of their choice.  The audience will have a unique experience where the musicians-composers perform live their music while the films/videos that have inspired them are simultaneously screened. 

"The contemporary cinema could take back this expressive freedom" the Moving Silence’s members state.  "Any visual style can profit from a sound language, by using advanced digital technologies as well as old analogue techniques. Live performances sustain and amplify the films as musicians can breathe new life into silent cinema, which inappropriately remained silent for such a long time." Encouraging collaboration and exchange between musicians, artists and cinematographers, the Moving Silence platform, therefore, invites the Nicosia audience to new audiovisual experiences expressed through live improvisations and interpretations, where experimental image and sound are expected to meet in unusual and unexpected ways.

What is Moving Silence?

Moving Silence was originally founded in the summer of 2009 by the musician Marco Brosolo, filmmaker Matthias Fritsch and producer Federico Bassetti with the aim to create events that connect the roots of cinematography with the present aesthetics of image, the live music production and the potential of new technology. It constitutes a poetic, intercultural and collaborative attempt in times of information overload. It embraces experimentation and merging between contemporary forms of visual and sound inviting artists from different parts of the world to join in. Moving Silence events have taken place in different cities around Europe.

Ένα βράδυ αφιερωμένο στη σύγχρονη κινούμενη εικόνα
και τον πειραματικό ήχο. 

Σε συνέχεια της μεγάλης επιτυχίας του Moving Silence στην Κύπρο το 2011, 2012 και 2013 στο Ίδρυμα ΆΡΤος, το Moving Silence πραγματοποιείται φέτος για τέταρτη συνεχή χρονιά σε συνεργασία με το Ινστιτούτο Γκαίτε στα πλαίσια του 6^ου X-Dream Festival.  Το Σάββατο 13 Δεκεμβρίου 2014 στις 8:30 μ.μ. στο ίδρυμα ΆΡΤος, μουσικοί και συνθέτες θα συναντηθούν για να ερμηνεύσουν ζωντανά στο κοινό μουσική που συνέθεσαν ειδικά για ταινίες χωρίς ήχο σύγχρονων δημιουργών της επιλογής τους.  Οι θεατές θα έχουν μια μοναδική εμπειρία όπου οι μουσικοί ερμηνεύουν ζωντανά τη μουσική τους ενώ γίνεται παράλληλη προβολή της ταινίας που επέλεξαν, που τους ενέπνευσε για το κομμάτι που ερμηνεύουν. 

"O σύγχρονος κινηματογράφος μπορεί να ανακτήσει την εκφραστική ελευθερία του” λένε τα μέλη του Moving Silence. "Κάθε ύφος εικόνας μπορεί να ωφεληθεί από τη γλώσσα του ήχου, ψηφιακού ή αναλογικού. Οι ζωντανές παραστάσεις ενισχύουν τα φιλμ καθώς οι μουσικοί μπορούν να φέρουν μια νέα πνοή ζωής στον βωβό κινηματογράφο, που, δυστυχώς, έμεινε σιωπηλός για πολύ καιρό”. Ενθαρρύνοντας τη συνεργασία και ανταλλαγή μεταξύ μουσικών, καλλιτεχνών και κινηματογραφιστών, και αφήνοντας χώρο στο ζωντανό αυτοσχεδιασμό, η πλατφόρμα Moving Silence καλεί  το κοινό να έρθει σε επαφή με νέες οπτικοακουστικές εμπειρίες, όπου ο ήχος και η εικόνα θα συναντηθούν με ασυνήθιστο και απροσδόκητο τρόπο.

Τι είναι το Moving Silence;

Η πλατφόρμα κινηματογραφιστών και μουσικών Moving Silence  ιδρύθηκε το 2009 στο Βερολίνο από τον μουσικό Marco Brosolo, τον κινηματογραφιστή Matthias Fritsch και τον παραγωγό Federico Bassetti με σκοπό να συνδέσει τις ρίζες του κινηματογράφου με την αισθητική της σύγχρονης εικόνας, τη ζωντανή παραγωγή μουσικής και πιθανές νέες τεχνολογίες. Είναι μια ποιητική, διαπολιτισμική προσπάθεια συνεργασίας σε μία εποχή υπερφορτωμένη με πληροφορίες.  Αγκαλιάζει τον πειραματισμό και τη συγχώνευση μεταξύ σύγχρονων μορφών οπτικής και ηχητικής. Εκδηλώσεις του Moving Silence έχουν οργανωθεί σε διαφορετικές ευρωπαϊκές πόλεις.

Video artists Susann Maria Hempel and Stefan Jeep present their works at the ARTos Foundation and the Goethe-Institut Nicosia, Cyprus. For this exhibition they developed new works each which are displayed together with already existing art works.

At the ARTos Foundation Susann Maria Hempel shows her most recent film while Stefan Jeep installs a site specific intervention. Both works have been directly influenced by their experiences in Cyprus during a stay in June 2014. Having found many absurd aspects of the island that not only match with an absurd general touch in their art works and art practice but also with the Bremen background they are coming from, a dominant influence of their perception of Cyprus has been absurdity which in many ways is a focus of their new works.

For the Goethe-Institut the artists and curator Ingmar Lähnemann chose four works that seem to deal explicitly with the strange situation of the building being located in the buffer zone, although all four works have been developed before the artists came to Cyprus. Two films by Susann Maria Hempel take place in settings of deterioration and decay and create an emotional ambience of displacement, vanitas and loss. Stefan Jeep reflects on militarian structures, sensations and operations via objects that viewers can use and via a video.

The Absurd as it was perceived to be a paradigm of Cyprus – and as it could be named a paradigm of Bremen, too – runs through all exhibited art works and gives the disparate media art projects of both artists a common ground that much resembles the experiences

they gained in Cyprus together.

Οι καλλιτέχνες video art Susann Maria Hempel και Stefan Jeep παρουσιάζουν τα έργα τους στο Ίδρυμα ‘ΑΡΤος και στο Ινστιτούτο Γκαίτε, Λευκωσία, Κύπρος. Για την έκθεση αυτή, και οι δύο καλλιτέχνες, δημιούργησαν νέα έργα που εκτίθενται μαζί με ήδη υπάρχοντα έργα τέχνης.

Στο Ίδρυμα ΆΡΤος, η Susann Maria Hempel παρουσιάζει την πιο πρόσφατη ταινία της, ενώ ο Stefan Jeep δημιουργεί μια παρέμβαση συγκεκριμένη στο χώρο. Και τα δύο έργα είναι άμεσα επηρεασμένα από τις εμπειρίες τους στην Κύπρο κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής τους, τον Ιούνιο του 2014. Ανακαλύπτοντας πολλές παράλογες πτυχές του νησιού οι οποίες συνάδουν όχι μόνο με την γενική παράλογη  αίσθηση που χαρακτηρίζει τα έργα και την πρακτική τους, αλλά και με τα βιώματα τους από την Βρέμη, από όπου κατάγονται, ο παραλογισμός είναι  μια κυρίαρχη επιρροή ως προς την γνώμη που σχημάτισαν για την Κύπρο, που με πολλούς τρόπους είναι και ο πυρήνας των νέων τους έργων.

Για το Ινστιτούτο Γκαίτε οι καλλιτέχνες και ο επιμελητής Ingmar Lähnemann επέλεξαν τέσσερα έργα που φαίνεται να καταπιάνονται εξολοκλήρου με την παράξενη κατάσταση του κτιρίου το οποίο βρίσκεται στη νεκρή ζώνη, παρόλο που και τα τέσσερα έργα έχουν δημιουργηθεί πριν την έλευση των καλλιτεχνών στην Κύπρο. Δύο ταινίες από την Susann Maria Hempel διαδραματίζονται σε φθειρόμενα και παρακμιακά τοπία, δημιουργώντας μια συναισθηματική ατμόσφαιρα μετατόπισης, ματαιοδοξίας και απώλειας. Ο Stefan Jeep αντανακλά σε στρατιωτικές δομές, αισθήσεις και διαδικασίες μέσω αντικειμένων τα οποία οι θεατές μπορούν να χρησιμοποιήσουν και μέσω ενός βίντεο.

Το Παράλογο, καθώς θεωρήθηκε χαρακτηριστικό γνώρισμα της Κύπρου - όπως θα μπορούσε επίσης να θεωρηθεί και για την Βρέμη - βρίσκετε μέσα σε όλα τα εκτιθέμενα έργα τέχνης και δίνει στα ανόμοια media art έργα και των δύο καλλιτεχνών ένα κοινό έδαφος που αναδεικνύει σε μεγάλο βαθμό τις εμπειρίες που αποκόμισαν από την Κύπρο.
