ARTos Foundation in collaboration with the French Institute in Cyprus, and with the support of the Municipality of Larnaca and the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture,  present “Julot – Hula Hoopla!”; an outdoor Circus Arts Performance, which will take place on the 5th May 2016 at Finikoudes (Athens avenue, Seafront stage) Larnaca, in the framework of the 8th X-Dream Festival. Julot will present his show at 16:00 and 17:00.  

And here is our man, Julot, the elastic and flexible wonder who will play with hoops, rhythms and his body; and all these while balancing on a nine meters high pole!! In the tradition of the Circus and its exploits, between sky and earth, Julot terrifies us and makes us laugh; He makes us rediscover the delicious taste of vertigo…

Further Performances on the 7 May 2016 at Molos, Limassol, for Europe Day and on the 6 May at Spyros Kyprianou Park (Aglantzia), Nicosia.

Το Ίδρυμα ARTos σε συνεργασία με το Γαλλικό Ινστιτούτο στην Κύπρο, και με τη στήριξη των Πολιτιστικών Υπηρεσιών του Υπουργείου Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού και του Δήμου Λάρνακας, παρουσιάζουν το Τσίρκο του Δρόμου «Julot – Hula Hoopla!». Η παράσταση θα λάβει χώρα στις 8 Μαΐου 2016 στην στην παραλία Φοινικούδων (Λεωφόρος Αθηνών, Εξέδρα παραλίας), στη Λάρνακα, στα πλαίσια του 8ου X-Dream Festival. Ο Julot θα μας χαρίσει δύο παραστάσεις, στις 16:00 και στις 17:00.

Ο ακροβάτης μας, ο  Julot, είναι ένα ελαστικό και ευέλικτο θαύμα ο οποίος θα παίξει με κρίκους, ρυθμούς και το ίδιο του το σώμα, και όλα αυτά ισορροπώντας σε ένα πόλο ύψους εννέα μέτρων!! Κατά την παράδοση του τσίρκου και τα κατορθώματά του, μεταξύ ουρανού και γης, ο Julot μας τρομάζει και μας κάνει να γελάμε, μας κάνει να ανακαλύψουμε ξανά την υπέροχη αίσθηση του ιλίγγου...

Workshop in DIY electronics with visual scores for experimental sound art

& Live Performances

In the framework of the 7th X-Dream Festival.

‘How to make a Theremidi Orchestra?’ is a series of workshops initiated by Theremidi Orchestra, based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, aimed at bringing together people from a wide range of fields in a several-day-long workshop to explore the beauty and the hums of DIY electronics and to create a social situation where communication is possible with non-verbal tools. Noise-script with Theremidi Orchestra is aimed at learning how to play atonal music in a group with the help of visual tools. To help the participants in playing, they will create an audio-visual piece as a cue for their sound creation. The inspiration for the workshop comes from a classic score for experimental sound art: the Cornelius Cardew Treatise and other examples of early visual scores. Visual Music is a method using visual structures in music and musical structures in visual patterns. Noise-script poses a question of what to do with visual music in the post-digital context, when it is essential to connect the physical space with digital and analogue technologies.

WHO MUST I BE TO JOIN THE WORKSHOP?

Anyone! This workshop is suitable for all women and men who are interested in electronics, DIY processes, hacking, noise and experimental sound art, media art, and all those great things we can do with sound and visual language. No previous knowledge is needed, just curious ears, eyes, and fingers. You may have never held a soldering iron in your hands and we will teach you how to master it. You may wield your iron every day and you will still have lots of fun. Workshop participation is free of charge.

DAY 1: DIY electronic music instrument: The participants will learn how to solder an electronic circuit board for a DIY music instrument. They will get some basic knowledge of the functions of electronic elements, and basic functions in an analogue logic chip. They will build one or more DIY music instruments from Theremidi Orchestra kit collection (TouchTone, feedback loop touch amplifier Theremini 4011, mini theremin MicroNoise, oscillator Super-in-Low, low frequency oscillator).

DAY 2: Visual score: Participants will get to know how to control their sound devices. They will learn the basics of experimental sound art composition, musical range, sound manipulation, and explore some historic references. In the second part of the workshop, they will draw an associative visual score for 12 minute sound improvisation and convert it to a simple video tool.

DAY 3: Rehearsals and live performances: Participants will dedicate their time to playing together. At the end of day three they will present their composition in a public performance followed by a composition of Theremidi Orchestra and a local sound artist, who will be announced shortly. The show will be audio recorded for post-production.

Post-production:

Video: Theremidi Orchestra will edit and publish the audio-visual work. Please refer to a past result of a similar workshop (Marmalade | Noisescript with Theremidi Orchestra).

THEREMIDI ORCHESTRA | BIO

Theremidi Orchestra (TO) is an audio-visual DIY community initiated by participants (men and women) of the Theremini and Teremidi Physical Interface Workshop , organised by Ljudmila – Ljubljana Digital Media Lab in May 2011. Rather than a subject, TO is a verb, an ongoing workshop of noise and drone production.

This hands-on electro noise ensemble exists in the present continuous, while referring to the history of electronic music. TO has a DIY/DIWO approach in making music and sound experiments, developing its own instruments based on open-source electronic circuits. Currently TO consists of nine active members (Dušan Zidar, Ida Hiršenfelder, Dare Pejić, Luka Frelih, Tina Dolinšek, Robertina Šebjanič, Tilen Sepić, Simon Bergoč and Saša Spačal.), coming from different professional backgrounds from visual arts, media art, electronics and humanities. 

Theremidi Orchestra is a process of mutual understanding and solving problems in a horizontal manner. The process of production involves experimenting with sound outputs, mutual composition of music scores, shared responsibilities for individual parts of the process, etc. Thus far, the orchestra performed, exhibited and held workshops at over thirty festivals and exhibitions mostly in Europe e.g. Piksel Festival in Bergen Norway; LiWoLi Festival in Linz, Austria; PoolLoop in Zürich, Switzerland; U3: Triennial of Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and also in US at CTSWaM & Eyebeam, New York, and @Share, New York, to name just a few. In 2013 TO published 4011 EP for Trivia Records independent label, and in 2015 soundtrack for Vitanje in Space: Sunita | Noordung Orbit documentary film.

Το «How to make a Theremidi Orchestra?» είναι μια σειρά εργαστηρίων με τους Theremidi Orchestra, που έχουν ως βάση τους τη Λιουμπλιάνα, Σλοβενία, με στόχο να φέρουν κοντά άτομα από ένα ευρύ φάσμα τομέων, σε ένα εργαστήρι διάρκειας μιας σειράς ημερών ούτως ώστε να εξερευνήσουν την ομορφιά και τα βουητά των DIY electronics και να δημιουργήσουν μια κοινωνική κατάσταση όπου η επικοινωνία να γίνεται εφικτή χωρίς τη χρήση λεκτικών-εργαλείων. Η δράση «Noise-script with Theremidi Orchestra» έχει ως στόχο την εκμάθηση του συλλογικού παιξίματος άτονης μουσική με τη βοήθεια οπτικών εργαλείων. Για να βοηθήσουν  τους συμμετέχοντες, οι Theremidi Orchestra θα δημιουργήσουν ένα οπτικοακουστικό έργο το οποίο θα λειτουργεί σαν νύξη ως προς την ηχητική τους δημιουργία. Η έμπνευση για το εργαστήρι προέρχεται από μια κλασική παρτιτούρα για πειραματικά ηχητικά εικαστικά έργα (sound art): το «Cornelius Cardew Treatise» και άλλα παραδείγματα πρώιμων οπτικών παρτιτούρων. Η Οπτική Μουσική είναι μια μέθοδος που χρησιμοποιεί οπτικές δομές στη μουσική και μουσικές δομές σε οπτικά μοτίβα. Η δράση «Noise-script» θέτει ένα ερώτημα ως προς τη χρήση της οπτικής μουσικής στην μετα-ψηφιακή εποχή, όταν η σύνδεση του φυσικού χώρου με ψηφιακές και αναλογικές τεχνολογίες είναι απαραίτητη.

ΣΕ ΠΟΙΟΥΣ ΑΠΕΥΘΥΝΕΤΕ ΤΟ ΕΡΓΑΣΤΗΡΙ; 

Σε όλους! Το εργαστήρι αυτό είναι κατάλληλο για όλες τις γυναίκες και τους άνδρες που ενδιαφέρονται για electronics, DIY διαδικασίες, hacking, θόρυβο και πειραματικά ηχητικά εικαστικά έργα (sound art), media art και όλα αυτά τα σπουδαία πράγματα που μπορούμε να κάνουμε μέσω της ηχητικής και οπτικής γλώσσας. Η προηγούμενη γνώση και  εμπειρία με το θέμα δεν είναι απαραίτητη, πέρα από μια δόση περιέργιαςστην  ακοή, ώραση και αφή. Ακόμη και αν δεν έχετε ξαναχρησιμοποιήσει ένα κολλητήρι ‘soldering iron,’ εμείς θα σας διδάξουμε πως. Η συμμετοχή στο εργαστήρι είναι δωρεάν.

1η ΗΜΕΡΑ: DIY electronic music instrument: Οι συμμετέχοντες θα μάθουν να κολλούν μια ηλεκτρονική πλακέτα για ένα DIY μουσικό όργανο. Θα αποκτήσουν κάποιες βασικές γνώσεις των λειτουργιών των ηλεκτρονικών στοιχείων και τις βασικές λειτουργίες ενώς αναλογικού logic chip. Θα φτιάξουν ένα ή περισσότερα DIY μουσικά όργανα από τη συλλογή «Theremidi Orchestra kit» (TouchTone, feedback loop touch amplifier Theremini 4011, mini theremin MicroNoise, oscillator Super-in-Low, low frequency oscillator).

2η ΗΜΕΡΑ: Visual score: Οι συμμετέχοντες θα μάθουν να ελέγχουν τις συσκευές ήχου που δημιούργησαν. Θα μάθουν τα βασικά για τη σύνθεση πειραματικών ηχητικών εικαστικών έργων (sound art), τη μουσική γκάμα, τον χειρισμό του ήχου και θα εξερευνήσουν ορισμένες σχετικές ιστορικές αναφορές. Στο δεύτερο μέρος του εργαστηρίου, θα συνθέσουν μια συνειρμική οπτική παρτιτούρα για ένα ηχητικό αυτοσχεδιασμό διάρκειας 12 λεπτών και θα το μετατρέψουν σε ένα απλό βίντεο- εργαλείο.

3η ΗΜΕΡΑ: Rehearsals and live performances: Οι συμμετέχοντες θα αφιερώσουν το χρόνο τους στο να παίζουν μαζί και στο τέλος της τρίτης ημέρας θα παρουσιάσουν τη σύνθεσή τους σε ένα δημόσιο live performance. Θα ακολουθείσει ένα live performance από τους Theremidi Orchestra και από ένα Κύπριο καλλιτέχνη, το όνομα του οποίου θα ανακοινωθεί σύντομα. Τα live performances θα ηχογραφούνται για μετέπειτα χρήση.

Post-Production:

Βίντεο: Οι Theremidi Orchestra θα επεξεργαστουν και θα δημοσιεύσουν το οπτικοακουστικό έργο. Παρακαλούμε όπως βρείτε στον πιο κάτω σύνδεσμο ένα παράδειγμα από τα αποτέλεσμα ενός παρόμοιου παλαιότερου εργαστηρίου (Marmalade | Noise-script with Theremidi Orchestra). 

THEREMIDI ORCHESTRA | ΒΙΟΓΡΑΦΙΚΟ

Οι Theremidi Orchestra (TO) είναι μια οπτικοακουστική DIY κοινότητα (γυναικών και ανδρών) που δημιουργήθηκε από τους συμμετέχοντες του εργαστηρίου «Theremini and Teremidi Physical Interface Workshop», το οποίο διοργανώθηκε από το Ljudmila – Ljubljana Digital Media Lab τον Μάιο του 2011. Παρά ένα αντικείμενο, οι TO είναι ρήμα, ένα συνεχές εργαστήριο θορύβου και παραγωγής drone.

Αυτό το «hands-on» σύνολο electro ήχου υπάρχει στον μέλοντα εξακολουθητικό καθώς αναφερέρετε στην ιστορία της ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής. Οι ΤΟ έχουν μια DIY / DIWO προσέγγιση ως προς τη μουσική δημιουργία και τους ηχητικούς πειραματισμούς, αναπτύσσοντας τα δικά τους μουσικά όργανα τα οποία βασίζονται σε ηλεκτρονικά κυκλώματα ανοικτού κώδικα (open-source electronic circuits). Στην παρούσα φάση αποτελούνται από 9 ενεργά μέλη (Dušan Zidar, Ida Hiršenfelder, Dare Pejić, Luka Frelih, Tina Dolinšek, Robertina Šebjanič, Tilen Sepić, Simon Bergoč and Saša Spačal.), τα οποία προέρχονται από διαφορετικά επαγγελματικά υπόβαθρα, από εικαστικές τέχνες, media arts, electronics και ανθρωπιστικές επιστήμες.  

Οι Theremidi Orchestra είναι μια διαδικασία αμοιβαίας κατανόησης και επίλυσης προβλημάτων με μια οριζόντια προσέγγιση ως προς την ιεραρχία. Η διαδικασία παραγωγής περιλαμβάνει πειραματισμό με sound outputs, σύνθεση παρτιτούρων από κοινού, κοινές ευθύνες για τα επιμέρους θέματα της διαδικασίας, κ.λ.π. Μέχρι στιγμής, έχουν πραγματοποιήσει performances, εκθέσεις και εργαστήρια σε πάνω από τριάντα φεστιβάλ και εκθέσεις κυρίως στην Ευρώπη, π.χ.Piksel Festival - Μπέργκεν, Νορβηγία, LiWoLi Festival – Λιντς, Αυστρία, PoolLoop – Ζυρίχη, Ελβετία, U3: Triennial of Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art – Λιουμπλιάνα, Σλοβενία καθώς επίσης και στην Αμερική, στο CTSWaM & Eyebeam, New York, and @Share – Νέα Υόρκη και πολλά άλλα. Το Ίδρυμα ARTos σε συνεργασία με το Moving Silence και το Ινστιτούτο Γκαίτε, και με τη στήριξη των Πολιτιστικών Υπηρεσιών του Υπουργείου Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού και την Πρεσβεία του Μεξικού στη Γερμανία, παρουσιάζουν το "Echoes from Berlin” μια βραδιά οπτικοακουστικών παραστάσεων από τους μουσικούς DE KJ (oqko, Μεξικό - Γερμανία) και Chikiss (Ρωσσία - Γερμανία) οι οποίοι έχουν σαν βάση την πόλη του Βερολίνου. Το "Echoes from Berlin” θα λάβει χώρα στις 9 Δεκεμβρίου και ώρα 20:30, στο Ίδρυμα ARTos.

«ontic», από τον DE KJ (oqko)

Το «ontic» είναι μια οπτικοακουστική διερεύνηση της σχέσης ανάμεσα στη φύση και τη δομή, την έννοια του "περιβάλλοντος" και πως η διαστάσεις της διατήρησης του επεκτείνονται πέρα από το φυσικό μέσο.

Το πρότζεκτ έχει ως στόχο να προκαλέσει, μέσα από την παρέμβαση εγκαταλελειμμένων χώρων και κατασκευών με τη χρήση φυσικών πηγών, την επιρροή της έννοιας της  πολιτικής στην έννοια του κοινωνικού, και κατεπέκταση τις πεποιθήσεις μας ως προς το πραγματικό «ψεύτικο» αίσθημα της συνείδησης. Το πρότζεκτ βασίζεται σε βιντεοσκοπήσεις φυσικών τοπίων, τα οποία προβάλλονται σε εγκαταλελειμμένα κτίρια. Η πηγή του ήχου του κάθε χώρου προβολής χρησιμοποιείτε και γίνεται μέρος του ηχογραφημένου ήχου, ενώ ο χώρος που προβάλετε το βίντεο, λειτουργεί ως παράσταση και προβολή, μέσα από τη ρύθμιση του πραγματικού ήχου που υπάρχει στο χώρο και του ήχου των βίντεοσκοπήσεων.

Το ίδιο το βίντεο είναι μέρος ενός αρχείου που συμβαδίζει με διαφορετικές αναλύσεις για αυτό το διάλογο μεταξύ του εμφανών αντίθετων σεναρίων

Η ocqo δημιουργήθηκε το 2015 και αυτοχαρακτηρίζεται ως μια διεπιστημονική δισκογραφική εταιρία μουσικής και τεχνών, καθοδηγούμενη από την ανάγκη ανάπτυξης μιας ταυτότητας, που να περιλαμβάνει μια ποικιλομορφία προσεγγίσεων μεταξύ του «club culture» και των εικαστικών  τεχνών. Το όραμα της oqko επικεντρώνεται στην προώθηση του οργανικού αλλά και του υβριδικού πειραματισμού της εποχής μας. Ένας κοινός πυρήνας, που γηώνει την πληθώρα των μορφών του σήμερα.

«Chikiss», από την Chikiss

Αυτό το βράδυ, το performance «Chikiss» θα παρουσιάσει ένα οικείο, ενδόμυχο πρόγραμμα σε minimal synth ήχο υπο τη συνοδεία βίντεο-προβολών της καλλιτέχνιδας.

Chickiss:

Η Chikiss είναι τραγουδίστρια, συνθέτρια και μουσικός, με καταγωγή από την Αγία Πετρούπολη, της Ρωσίας η οποία εδώ και λίγο καιρό διαμένει στο Βερολίνο. Μία από τις πιο παραγωγικές και ευέλικτες καλλιτέχνιδες της σήμερινης Ρωσικής ηλεκτρονικής σκηνής, σε σόλο δουλειές και σε συνεργασίες. Έχει συνεργαστεί και έκανε διασκευές για μια πλειάδα μουσικών και καλλιτεχνών, όπως οι Ensemble Economique, Jenny Wilson, Milky Toad, Sun Glitters, Barbara Morgenstern, Arsenii Morozov (Sonic Death, Padla Bear Outfit) και πολλούς άλλους. Η Chikiss έχει παίξει σε διάφορα συγκροτήματα και παρουσίασε τη δουλειά της σε πολλά διεθνή φεστιβάλ και κλαμπς, ενώ έχει επίσης επιμεληθεί τη ρωσο-ουκρανική ηλεκτρονική συλλογή γυναικών καλλιτεχνών «She Knows More Than She Thinks» της καλτ Καλιφορνέζικης δισκογραφικής εταιρίας NOT NOT FUN. Έχωντας επιβιώσει τις διάφορες μεταμορφώσεις της, κινείταιμε αυτοπεποίθηση, σήμερα,  προς την πρωτοποριακή κατεύθυνση μιας νέας ρωσικής electro-indie σκηνής.

Echoes from Berlin: 2 audiovisual performances

Within the framework of the 7th X-Dream Festival

ARTos Foundation in collaboration with Moving Silence and Goethe Institute, and with the support of the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Embassy of Mexico in Germany present “Echoes from Berlin” an evening of audiovisual performances by the Berlin based musicians DE KJ (oqko, Mexico - Germany) and Chikiss (Russia – Germany), which will take place on the 9th December at 20:30, at ARTos Foundation.

‘Ontic’, by DE KJ (oqko)

ontic is an audiovisual study of the relationship between nature and structure; the acquired concept of “environment” and how it’s preservation extends further than the physical medium. 

Through the intervention of abandoned spaces and structures by the use of natural sources, the project aims to question the influence of the political in the social, therefore, our presuppositions towards actual fake sense of consciousness. ontic is based on video recordings of natural places, projected in abandoned buildings. The sound source works as part of the actual score, while the venue where the piece is presented works as a performance and a screening; through modulating the actual sound of the venue and the one from the actual video recordings. 

The footage itself is part of an archive conformed by different analysis for this dialogue between apparent opposite scenarios.

Oqko:

Created in 2015, oqko defines itself as an interdisciplinary label for music and arts, driven by the need to develop an identity, incubating a diversity of approaches between the club culture and fine arts. The vision of oqko focuses on promoting both organic and hybrid experimentation towards our time. A common root that grounds the plurality of today’s formats.

‘Chikiss’, by Chikiss

On this evening, the “Chikiss” performance will present an intimate program in minimal synth sound with video projections created by the artist. 

Chickiss:

Chikiss is a singer, song-writer and musician from Saint-Petersburg, Russia and since recently, based in Berlin. One of the most productive and versatile artists on nowadays’ Russian electronic scene, alone and in collaborations; she has collaborated and made remixes for plenty of musicians and artists such as Ensemble Economique, Jenny Wilson, Milky Toad, Sun Glitters, Barbara Morgenstern, Arsenii Morozov (Sonic Death, Padla Bear Outfit.) and many more. Chikiss has played in numerous bands and acted in many international festivals and clubs, while also having curated the Russian-Ukrainian female electronic compilation “She Knows More Than She Thinks” on the cult Californian label NOT NOT FUN. Surviving the various metamorphoses, she's confidently moving in the vanguard direction of a new Russian electro-indie scene.
